Abstract

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is an Indian state-owned oil and natural gas company with its headquarters at Mumbai, Maharashtra and with Navratna status. HPCL has been ranked 260th in the Fortune Global 500 rankings of the world's biggest corporations (2013) and 4th among India's Companies for the year 2012. HPCL has about 25% marketing share in India among PSUs and a strong marketing infrastructure. The Government of India owns 51.11% shares in HPCL and others are distributed amongst financial institutes, public and other investorsThe oil and gas sector is among the six core industries in India and plays a major role in influencing decision making for all the other important sections of the economy.In 1997-98, the exploration licensing policy(NELP) was envisaged to fill the ever increasing gap between Indias gas demand and supply. A recent report points out the Indian oil and gas industries is anticipated to be worth US$ 139.8 billion by 2015. Indias economy growth is closely related to energy demand; therefore the need for oil and gas is projected to grow more, thereby making the sector quite conducive for investment.
